The Milan City Council is actively opposed to the sale of San Siro and its surrounding grounds to AC Milan and Inter Milan football clubs. A resolution has been proposed allowing both teams to acquire the ground, paving the way for a new stage project. This new stage will involve the demolition of about 90% of the existing structure. However, this proposal is a subject of considerable controversy within the city council, as reported by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, via FCTerNews.
The sale resolution of the stadium is faced with significant criticism from the right-wing elected officials, who denounce a failure to respect the deadlines for convening the committee. Similarly, the project meets the opposition of the left-wing elected representatives, some calling for a specific consultation of the environmental adviser, Elene Grandi, who has already expressed his disagreement. The municipal council itself has expressed a formal refusal on this issue, pointing to a lack of initiative in decision-making, simply reviewing and voting on resolutions.
The vice-president of the committee “Yes Meazza”, Claudio Trotta, stressed the financial importance of San Siro, considering that the revenues generated by the concerts rentals in June and July (about 10 million euros) are almost equivalent to the sums that Milan and Inter owe annually to the council. This financial autonomy suggests that the stadium could be viable independently of the two football clubs.
