The 2023/24 season was marked by a turning point for John van ’t Schip at Ajax Amsterdam. After a difficult start to the season and the departure of Maurice Steijn, Van ’t Schip, initially appointed acting coach, expected an extension of his role. However, this perspective has never materialized. He remembers with mixed feelings of his time as an acting coach, highlighting a good start and physical condition of the team, but also a staff not entirely under his control. He mentioned that many players recruited by Sven Mislintat were informed of their departure, which created an atmosphere of tension and management difficulty.
Despite the problems encountered, Van ’t Schip managed to drive the Ajax to fifth place in Eredivisie. He was expected to continue to play a role in the club, supporting the new coach and focusing on the development of young talent. However, the organizational changes of the summer of 2024 had negative consequences for him. With Alex Kroes and Marijn Beuker leading football affairs, Van ’t Schip felt that it was no longer necessary. A new function was proposed to him, similar to that currently held by Fred Grim, but he refused this proposal, which eventually led to the breach of his contract with the Ajax.
Last February, Van ’t Schip found a new opportunity to become a coach of the Armenian National Team. His passage was short, with four games without victory. In August, both sides decided to terminate their cooperation. This new experience highlights the complexity of his career and the challenges of running a leading football club like Ajax Amsterdam. He left the club with a mixture of disappointment and gratitude for the positive moments he had experienced.
